FreeGeek Chicago holds volunteer program hours from 11AM to 5PM on Sundays.

On Sundays, new volunteer orientation starts at 11.30AM and will last around 3 hours -- you should leave at least that much time your first day. Returning volunteers can come in any time before 4PM and stay for however long they'd like.

We accept recycling and donations and walk-in sales customers on OpenBuild days. However, staff and supervolunteers will be busy running the Earn-A-Box program, so we'd prefer if you stop by during our weekday hours (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 10am - 3pm) to purchase computers and parts or to drop-off a donation.g

The Care and Feeding Class will be offered regularly as a supplement to our volunteer program, offered largely as support for new users of Xubuntu, the Linux operating system that we install on the Freekboxes that volunteers earn after completing 24 hours of service.

The regular topics of discussion will be documented on the class's wiki page as they evolve. The last half hour or so of class will be more open-ended, with instructors demonstrating tasks at the request of participants.

Entrepreneurs meet on a regular basis (typically once a month) to share issues and successes on their current projects with other entrepreneurs. These meetings are an opportunity for all to exchange information, knowledge and contacts in a trusted environment. Members of Entrepreneur Commons also have access to the global network of entrepreneurs who have already joined local chapters in other places, or who have joined the online community through the Entrepreneur Commons Academy (http://entreco.supercoolschool.com). Currently there are 11 cities with active chapters. What is the format of the meeting: The program consist of monthly closed-group meetings (5 to 20 entrepreneurs per group) where entrepreneurs can share successes and challenges, so that all can benefit from good news and all can contribute to resolve issues. It also includes regular (semi-annual) meetings with an extended group of partners from the entrepreneurial ecosystem, as well as regular adhoc classes provided through the online peer-learning platform. There is no dollar cost for attending, the real cost of the meetings is the time it will take away from other things, which is a real commitment for an entrepreneur. And this is also the only way entrepreneurs will get value out of the meetings, because the level of information shared at the first meeting is not the same as the level of information shared after 6 months of interacting on a regular basis. Chicago Drupal Meet Up Group Our September meetup will be held at THE OFFICE in Bucktown for the first time ever. Applied example/strategy: How do music/ebook download cards work and get configured?" 20min presentation based off AquarianRecords.com Joel Finkel will be presenting...."We use Drupal Views to define how data are retrieved. Filters and Arguments refine (restrict) what data are returned. Usually this is pretty straight forward. I will present a more difficult case in which I had to create a lookup table that maps Gregorian dates to Torah Portion names and that then uses a returned Torah Portion name as an Argument to a View. I will show how to build a module that, when installed, creates and populates a database table. I will demonstrate how to build a simple web service that is used to query that table. I will demonstrate how this is all integrated with Views to allow the user to enter a date and return only those nodes that are appropriate for that date. A little background: Jews read the Torah (the first 5 books of the Old Testament) straight through each year. Starting at the beginning, each week we read the next Torah Portion. Each Torah Portion (also called a Parsha) has a name. The Jewish calendar is a lunar one, while the Gregorian calendar is a solar one. Therefore, a specific Parsha is not read on the same Gregorian date each year. When a child reaches 13, she or he has a Bat or Bar Mitzvah, and reads part of that week's Parsha. Now, what if I want to buy a gift for that child but only know the Gregorian date? I need to find the Parsha for that date. This is where my module comes in. My client is an artist who creates gifts that are based on Parshas. But her customers only know the date of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Rather than code a very complicated algorithm to convert a Gregorian date to a Parsha name, I created a lookup table with 15 years of data. I created a web service that accepts a Gregorian date and returns the Parsha for that date. I use that Parsha name as an Argument to a View that retrieves products (gifts) that have been assigned that Parsha name as a Taxonomy Term."
